Calgary’s theatre scene is among Canada’s most vibrant. Premiering new work, sparking international collaborations, and re-fashioning classics, the theatre inspires imaginations. With a bevy of venues – indoor and out, grand and intimate – the theatrics knows no bounds.

Get in on the one-act action at Lunchbox Theatre, the world’s longest running lunchtime theatre. Located right next to the Calgary Tower, Lunchbox Theatre encourages guests to bring their lunches and soak in some comedies, dramas and musicals in a short period of time. Calgarians love attending because its an escape from the day-to-day grind.

At Theatre Calgary, there are new plays in development yearly. For the Spring season, you’ll have A Thousand Splendid Suns and the new Gershwin musical, Crazy For You. In the winter months, fan favourite A Christmas Carol has been a family tradition and sells out quickly, so make sure to look into tickets when you plan your trip!

Alberta Theatre Projects is a downtown hub for contemporary theatre, performances about what it means to be alive right now, especially in Canada, as the company leads in the development of new Canadian plays.

Downstage – yet another Calgary company – tackles provocative Canadian social issues on stage with two scripts produced each season and a biennial festival called Uprising.

Theatre Junction GRAND calls itself a multidisciplinary culture house for live art. Theatre, dance, music and visual art combine in new works that tour Canada and the world from its home in The Grand Theatre, more than a century old.

A tiny troupe that could – One Yellow Rabbit has become one of Canada’s most celebrated theatrical forces with shows staged at the downtown Arts Commons. In collaboration with the various arts organizations in the city, High Performance Rodeo, the largest international festival of the arts in Western Canada, will be from January 5 – February 2, celebrating all things artistic. It is not to be missed as it is a convergence of local, national and international performers sharing their award-winning pieces.
