A vibrant new cocktail culture is positively blooming in Calgary with custom made beverages that throw back to retro classics or push the envelope with tropical and exotic elixirs.

The Calgary scene is budding with a new wave of cocktails at play as spring has sprung and inventive ideas are brewing. The best place to experiment? At a secret speakeasy for course! Model Citizen is one of the greatest hidden gems in the city, offering an intimate environment and a monthly rotating cocktail menu. Test your tastebuds with Bobbing for Apples, a master creation by Madeleine MacDonald, that features an egg white and an apple with cognac, Grand Marnier and cider.

Continuing on with the VIP evening, visit the other cocktail oasis that some Calgarians aren’t even aware of. Escape to Sub Rosa, the speakeasy lounge that can be found below The Guild off of Stephen Avenue. Find the entrance by following the neon glow of Sub Rosa’s logo, a triangle that sits above its doors, and enter into a luxurious space that is out of the Calgary ordinary. Indulge in the Wild Rose, a delectable cocktail featuring Beefeater 24 Gin, St-Germain elderflower, prosecco, rose syrup, cucumber and lemon.

Not far from The Guild is newcomer restaurant KLEIN/HARRIS that is recognized for its True North cuisine and its elevated libation program. Partner and cocktail curator Christina Mah offers a variety of true Canadian creations like the Tiki Horse made with distilled Alberta Dark Horse Whiskey & B.C. Rootbeer Bittered Sling Extracts. Mah is no stranger to the industry and is considered the Cocktail Queen in Calgary, making her cocktail creations top of mind for many.
